Concerts for the America’s Cup in Barcelona

Free concerts for the 2024 America’s Cup in Barcelona

Barcelona stands out as the “only global metropolis” to have served as the venue for the three most notable sporting events: The Olympic Games in 1992, world football and basketball championships, and now the America’s Cup.

The Catalan capital has spent almost a year getting ready to host the 37th edition of the America’s Cup. The city will be the main setting for this historic sporting event, and has launched an ambitious renovation plan to mark the occasion, almost completely transforming the Port Vell harbour, along with such other initiatives as the creation of the first information centre about the competition. As part of the preparations to welcome the boats, the city has organised a Cultural Regatta, a wide-ranging programme covering more than 200 cultural, artistic, sporting, culinary, scientific and entertainment activities, many of which will be free of charge.

The most notable items on the agenda include two majestic concerts to be performed free of charge, courtesy of two renowned contemporary conductors: Gustavo Dudamel and Ludovic Morlot. On 11 and 12 July, San Sebastián Beach will become the epicentre for Classics on the Beach, with over a hundred musicians giving two open-air performances for everyone to enjoy. The first concert, on 11 July, will be conducted by Ludovic Morlot, at the head of the Barcelona Symphony and Catalan National Orchestra, as well as the Orfeó Català choir, along with contributions by such leading soloists as Serena Sáenz, baritone Josep Ramon Olivé, mezzosoprano Rinat Shaham and tenor Freddie de Tommaso.

The second concert, scheduled for 12 July, will be conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, with star performers from the Liceu Choir and Symphony Orchestra. The event will feature two renowned soloists of international reputation: violinist María Dueñas and cellist Pablo Fernández. The Orfeó Català Children’s Choir will likewise be contributing their talents. This concert will be open to the whole community, providing the opportunity to enjoy some of the most iconic works by John Williams, such as the soundtrack theme tunes from Superman, Jurassic Park, Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Aside from these two Classics on the Beach shows, Barcelona will also be serving up another notable musical event. On 15 June the Port Vell harbour will be the main venue for the 38th edition of the Grand Habaneras Festival entitled ‘Barcelona Looking Out to Sea’. This year there will be a new format and location, with performances by groups including Crema Catalana, Boira and Ultramar. Later, on 10 October, Barcelona’s beach will witness the opening ceremony of the America’s Cup, transforming the Port Vell with music, lights and a flotilla of boats, one key feature being a temporary lighthouse to illuminate the Sagrada Familia. Performers including Sílvia Pérez-Cruz and Bad Gyal are also expected to perform at the event. Both events will be in the open air, with entrance free of charge for all.
