Opera at the Palau de la Música Catalana, August 2024
Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana is getting ready for an unforgettable month of August, full of music and emotion, with productions of three iconic operas which promise to take audiences on a journey through the most sublime expressions of operatic art. The month’s agenda includes “Carmen” by Georges Bizet, “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi, and “Madame Butterfly” by Giacomo Puccini, each with its own magic and style, offering a unique experience on this landmark stage.
Carmen, by Georges Bizet: 2 and 3 August
The month opens with Georges Bizet’s thrilling and seductive “Carmen”, one of the most performed and acclaimed operas worldwide. First premiered in 1875, “Carmen” continues to captivate audiences with its vibrant music and compelling story of love and betrayal. Set in Seville, the work tells the story of the gypsy Carmen and her tragic love affair with the soldier Don José. The version to be presented at the Palau de la Música Catalana is a full staging, lasting two and a quarter hours, including a 15 minute intermission.
The production features a symphony orchestra, renowned soloists, chorus and Spanish dancing troupe, all making for a more authentic and dynamic performance. More than 60 performers will be on stage to breathe life into the characters and setting of this masterpiece of French romanticism, with costumes and lighting designed specifically to embellish the unique characteristics of the Palau. From the emotive “Habanera” to the dramatic final climax, “Carmen” promises to be an unforgettable experience for all those attending.
La Traviata, by Giuseppe Verdi: 25 August
Towards the end of the month, on 25 August, the Palau de la Música Catalana will host another jewel of the operatic repertoire: “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi. Based on the novel “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas fils, the work tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan who finds true love with Alfredo Germont, only to face the tragedy of illness and social prejudice.
The version to be presented is a two-hour stage production, with an intermission of 15 minutes. It will feature a symphony orchestra, soloists, chorus and ballet, with a total of more than 60 performers on stage. The elaborate lighting and costumes are designed to complement the architecture and acoustics of the Palau, creating an all-embracing atmosphere which will highlight the most emotive moments of the opera, such as the joyous “Brindisi” and the heart-rending “Addio del passato”. “La Traviata” is a work combining melodic beauty with a profound exploration of human emotion, making this performance an unmissable event.
Madame Butterfly, by Giacomo Puccini: 31 August
To round off the month, we have “Madame Butterfly” by Giacomo Puccini, to be performed on 31 August. The opera, premiered in 1904, tells the tragic story of Cio-Cio San, a young geisha who falls head over heels in love with the US Navy officer Pinkerton. Cio-Cio San’s ingenuity and devotion contrast with Pinkerton’s superficiality, leading to a painful and moving dénouement.
The version staged at the Palau de la Música Catalana will be a two-hour production with an intermission of 15 minutes, featuring a symphony orchestra as an integral part of the show, soloists, chorus and ballet. The period costumes and lighting have been painstakingly designed to make the most of the architectural and acoustic features of the Palau, creating an outstanding visual and musical experience. More than 60 performers will be on stage to breathe life into this work, its wonderful orchestration and exotic, emotive melodies having made “Madame Butterfly” one of the most loved and frequently performed operas worldwide.
